Sudhz read it; it would definitely act as a wakeup call. I highly recommend this book. Shrimati’s mother-in-law never accepted her. The ambitious boy aspires to be the school topper, but it is Shrimati, who tops, while he ends up second. Sep 14, Beena rated it it was amazing. The bakula flowers are the attachments to her love letters, carrying the symbolic meaning that the fragrance of their love will never go away.

Despite opposition from their families, they get married after completing their education and settle in Bombay. The unassuming Bakula flower has an extraordinary property; it has a sweet fragrance, but when the flower dries, it has an even sweeter smell.

Shrikant first notices Shrimati because of the Bakula flowers she puts on her hair. This is my first novel by her and I am really really glad I bought this book on an impulse the cover was pretty hehe. The connection with the story for me started instantly from the very first page as the background and religious practices which Sudha Murthy has explained here, I know it and have seen very closely too. During higher secondary education both started loving each other.

The differential appreciation of Bhamati, the woman who was married to a sage who was writing a commentary on the Dharmasastra and who took care of him silently, is an indication of the things to come. A simple but riveting story of a well educated and well to-do couple, where post marriage the husband takes the center stage while the wife fades in the background. I often wondered if one reason he ‘fell’ for her was so that he could show himself that no matter how many times she beat him in school, ultimately she is completely dependent on him, and a simple housewife while he has advanced to the one of the highest steps on the ladder.

A beautiful love story that has NO happy ending.

Summary on the book cover gives you a fair idea of what the story is but only by reading it do you understand the emotions filled in murtht the story. The book is about balance in life, relationships and most importantly the choices we make.
